I started the redesign of my website with a default install of
Wordpress 2.1 and Derek Punsalan's Widgetized October Special
WordPress theme. His theme can be downloaded here: http://

The default theme had a search link here, with the box in the
footer. I replaced the text with a custom search box from a
Google Coop search which searches all my websites. While some
people may just wish to search this site, I think it more likely
that people remember something I wrote but not where I wrote it
I wanted a menu that would expand and collapse depending on where
people were in the site. I ended up using the "folding paged
widget" which met my needs:http://navyroad.com/wordpress-plugins/

The photos were made with the "photo drop" dashboard widget for
OS X:http://www.dropping.at/The hover-effect which highlights the
image when the mouse is over it was made with CSS following the
instructions on this page:http://www.cssdrive.com/index.php/
examples/exampleitem/highlight_image_opacity
The biggest modification I had to make to the theme was to add a
third sidebar. This was actually easier than I thought, requiring
simply changing the number of sidebars from 2 to 3 in functions.
php. More complex was tweaking the CSS so that the widgets added
to this sidebar looked good (as well as modifying the various
default templates to remove the blog archives stuff that was
initially in this location
